Importance of Staying Hydrated

Water is the most essential, yet most forgotten, nutrient for human beings. You can last for weeks without food, but only days without water. Every day your body loses water through sweat, urine, feces and breathing. Summer heat and outdoor activities increase perspiration and the risk of dehydration.

Maintaining hydration is important to your health. However, you may be so busy with everyday activities that you forget for long periods of time to pause for a water break. This can adversely affect your health, and once you start feeling thirsty you are already dehydrated.

Signs of dehydration include:

• Fatigue
• Loss of appetite
• Digestive imbalances
• Flushed skin
• Heat intolerance
• Stiffness, inflammation, and muscle spasms
• Light-headedness
• Irritating skin troubles: acne, dryness, chapped lips
• Dark-colored urine
• Dry cough

We Know that Drinking the Right Amount of Water Each Day can be Difficult

Determining the right amount of water you need to stay hydrated is no easy task. Even though the “drink 8, 8 oz. glasses of water a day” rule has been very popular, it’s important to note that individual fluid needs differ depending on your level of activity, how much you sweat, environmental temperature, humidity, the clothes you are wearing, etc. An easy way to see if you are properly hydrated is to check your urine. If it’s clear, pale or a straw-color, you are okay. If it’s darker than that, you need to up your water intake!

Aging impairs the body’s natural thirst mechanism, which makes it easier to become dehydrated. At a minimum you should drink HALF your body weight in ounces of water. For example if you weight 150 lbs. you need to consume 75 ounces of water per day. If you are working in the garden, or exercising you must increase the amount of water to compensate for water loss due to increased perspiration.

Remember that caffeine magnifys the potential for dehydration. For every cup of coffee, tea or caffeinated soda you consume add an additional cup of water to counteract caffeine’s diuretic effect.

The quality of the water you drink is important to your health.

Whether your water comes from a municipal water plant or from a well it is wise to have it tested for contaminants that might be harmful to your well being. If it does, there are several Water Treatment options available to protect you. Depending on what is in your water Reverse Osmosis or Ultra Filtration, Ultraviolet Purification, or Ozone Technology may be the best option to safeguard your health.

Beware of Hard Water Ruining Your Granite or Marble Countertops

Hard water is very “hard” on marble and granite. Both stones are porous and can absorb water. This makes them very susceptible to the mineral deposits in hard water. This mineral build-up leaves a whitish, crusty film and or spots, that stain granite and marble. The stains that can occur on any part of the surface are particularly noticeable around faucets. They are difficult to remove without damaging the marble or granite.

Removing the mineral deposits from your water with a Water Softener goes a long way in protecting stone counter tops. This is the best way to keep them looking beautiful, and new.
