Best Water – Best Pregnancy

Congratulations, you or someone you love is expecting a baby! Pregnancy is an exciting time. Are you looking for all the measures you need to take now that you are going to have a little one? Trying to figure out a special gift for the soon-to-be new parents? How about safe and pure water?

Why Water?

Whether you’re pregnant or not, your body needs water to function properly. However, drinking water during pregnancy is twice as important since building another human places many demands on a woman’s body. The American Pregnancy Association suggests that drinking a minimum of 10 glasses of good quality water a day is an absolute must during pregnancy.

Water’s Responsibilities in Pregnancy

Water is responsible for carrying oxygen and nutrients to cells, tissues and organs. Therefore,  you must always hydrate to ensure that essential nutrients transfer properly to meet the developmental needs of the growing baby. The amniotic sack consumes most of it. Amniotic fluid replenishes itself every hour using approximately a cup of the water stored in your body. As a result, keeping a regular water intake is vital to insure the protection of your unborn baby within the womb.

Water flushes out the body, and helps prevent common pregnancy problems such as:

  • Constipation
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Bladder infections

It also prevents dehydration. Dehydration is a main contributor to:

  • Headaches
  • Cramping
  • Irritability
  • Fatigue
  • Aching muscles
  • Dizziness

Contrary to popular belief, if feet and ankles are swollen, drinking more water can actually help! Fluid retention can result from not drinking enough since your body hangs on to more fluid if it senses dehydration.

During the third trimester it is especially important to drink plenty of water! Dehydration can trigger contractions that can lead to preterm labor.

Importance of the Quality of Your Water

Although drinking plenty of water during pregnancy has numerous benefits, special attention must be paid to the quality of  water you consume. There are certain contaminants found in untreated tap and bottled water that can pose health risks to pregnant women. Examples are E. Coli, Pesticides, Industrial Chemicals,  Lead, Nitrates and Nitrites, and Arsenic. Lead exposure during pregnancy and childhood can reduce cognitive function, lower IQ, and increase attention-related behavioral problems. High levels of Nitrates and Nitrites can link to thyroid dysfunction in pregnant women. This can cause pregnancy complications, reduce IQ scores, and have other neuro-developmental problems in children. High levels of Arsenic, which is mostly found in Well Water, can increase the risk of a miscarriage, birth defects and preterm birth.

Hydration is very important during pregnancy. Ensuring water you consume is safe and pure is crucial for setting the foundation for a healthy life outside the womb.
