Chromium-6 (Erin Brockovich)

Is Chromium-6 in Your Water?

Chromium-6 is the carcinogenic chemical that Erin Brockovich fought against in the Hinkley case, 15 plus years ago.

Chromium-6 has been known to cause cancer in people who come into contact with it. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), 250 million Americans are currently drinking tap water tainted with this carcinogen.

The EPA passed a law years ago that water with Chromium-6 is “safe” as long as it’s under 100 parts per billion. According to PBS that is, “600 times greater than the public health goal established by the California Environmental Protection Agency in the wake of the Hinkley well poisoning scandal.”

This issue does not just affect people on wells, but city water as well.

Some of the Counties Affected in Our Area:

  • Alachua County
  • Sumter County
  • Marion County
  • Citrus County

The Environmental Working Group produced a map showing all the areas in the U.S. that are currently effected by Chromium-6.
