We’ve been using ozone since 1906 in drinking water plants starting in Europe.Nice, France is home to the first industrial ozonation plant. Today it’s the most popular water purification method in the world.
The FDA accepts ozone as safe and use it in every water system built in the last 15 to 20 years. Ozone is a powerful oxidant that inactivates pesticides, fungus, organic materials. And contaminants such as bacteria and viruses, efficiently and more effectively than chlorine.
What Are Ozone Water Purification Systems And How Effective Are They?
First let’s understand what Ozone is. The type of oxygen we breathe in every day is O2, meaning 2 atoms of oxygen. Ozone consists of 3 atoms of oxygen (O3), making an unstable molecule where one of the atoms weakly connects to the others and will readily transfer itself to other substances in water. This atom of oxygen, which has powerful oxidizing and disinfecting properties, will oxidize microorganisms such as viruses and bacteria by destroying the cellular wall of the organism which causes it to die.
The primary benefits of Ozone are:
• Kills viruses, bacteria, cysts, fungi and algae on contact
• Disinfects at rates up to 3,000 times faster than Chlorine
• Breaks down harmful synthetic chemicals into less dangerous molecules
• Removes Iron, Manganese and Sulfur
• Eliminates taste, odor and appearance problems
• Can use it for some pesticide removal in water, depending on severity
The Process
Ozone Water Purification Systems work by infusing incoming water with highly reactive ozone molecules. The system starts with an ozone generating chamber where either a high intensity Ultraviolet (UV) light or a “cold” electrical discharge is used to break the bonds of oxygen molecules, and create the unstable ozone molecule. Ozone passes into a diffuser, which creates bubbles saturated with ozone molecules that mixes with water in a purification tank. This causes the weaker oxygen molecules in the ozone to separate and bind themselves to unwanted molecules in the water. This inactivates biological components including bacteria and viruses. It also bonds with many dissolved minerals, causing them to precipitate to the bottom of standing water. Ozone is found to effectively remove 99% of all biological pathogens including Giardia and Cryptosporidium.
Fun Facts
Ozone must be generated on site since it has a half-life of only a few minutes. This means after it purifies the water, any remaining molecules break down into standard oxygen (O2) adding nothing to the water but pure oxygen. And produces no unpleasant odor or taste. How wonderful is this?
Chlorine, on the other hand can produce a carcinogenic byproduct – Trihalomethanes (THMs) when it combines with organic matter found in water. In addition, chlorine produces an unpleasant odor and taste.
Ozone Water Purifiers have relatively few mechanical parts and no filters to replace, which means their maintenance comes at a low cost.
Water purified by ozone is highly oxygenated, free of protozoa, fungi, germs and bacteria so is safe to drink.
Ozone water treatment will not remove total dissolved solids such as nitrates, sodium, chlorides, or fluoride. Also, it does not soften water.
