Stress and Dehydration

Second to air, water is our bodies most vital substance. Water is a key component for our body to function. It effects bones, blood, muscle, skin, saliva, organs, etc. It is necessary for digesting and absorbing vitamins and nutrients, proper digestion, detoxifying the liver and kidneys, and carrying away waste.

Our Bodies Depend on Water for Survival and Health

We lose water every day when we breathe, sweat and go to the bathroom. Because our bodies can’t store water it is important that we replace it throughout the day.

Without the right amount of water, our bodies become dehydrated and stop working properly. One of the least known, yet detrimental consequences of dehydration is stress.

When under stress, our heart beats rapidly; we breathe shallower and faster, and perspiration increases causing our body to lose more water.

A study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that dehydration by as little as half a liter (2 cups)  “…strongly increased cortisol, epinephrine and norepinephrine, the primary stress hormones.” Our bodies assume a survival mode and take the fight-or-flight position. The stress hormones remain activated until the stressful situation, or state of dehydration is resolved.

Without replacing the water lost a vicious cycle is established: Dehydration causes stress and stress causes dehydration.

Of course dehydration is not the only cause of stress, and drinking more water won’t make our problems go away. But it is safe to say that drinking enough water is a positive first step toward breaking the dehydration/stress cycle.

According to new research, up to 75% of Americans may be functioning in a chronic state of dehydration. Although many of us understand the importance of staying hydrated, it is easy to forget to drink water throughout our busy days.

Here are some tips to make staying hydrated easier:

– Fill a stainless steel or glass bottle with Purified Water and keep it with you wherever you go.

– Keep a glass of water next to your bed so you can drink right before you go to bed and first thing in the morning. Your body loses water while you sleep.

– Take small sips when you drink allowing your body to absorb the water. Make sure not to down big amounts at once this will overflow your kidneys.

– Avoid caffeinated beverages including: coffee, tea and sodas. These beverages will only worsen the stress condition and weaken the adrenal system, which is central to the hormonal system – drink Purified Water instead.

– Keep a record of how much water you drink throughout the day.

– Hydrate before, during and after exercise.

– Don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink water, by then you may be 2 glasses below your normal water needs.

– Drink more when you’re sick. Even though you don’t feel like it, you really need to keep hydrated to help your body recover from various infections. If you’re dehydrated, you’ll feel much worse.

Remember that our health is truly dependent on the quality and quantity of the water we drink. If you want to improve your water let us know!

Are Chemicals in Water Fueling Food Allergies?

We know that chemicals and hard minerals in water can cause skin conditions and allergies (dry skin, dermatitis, eczema and hives). But, what if these chemicals  link to food allergies?

Facts on Food Allergies in America

The number of Americans with food allergies is higher than ever before. Almost 15 million Americans suffer, including 1 in every 13 children.

A study released in 2013 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated, “food allergies among children increased approximately 50% between 1997 and 2011.” This is an alarming statistic!

Tap Water (Chlorine) May Be Part of the Blame

  • Research, by the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI), indicates chlorine in tap water may be partially to blame.
  • Chlorine is used by 90% of municipalities in the U.S., therefore it effects nearly everyone.
  • Researchers believe that Dichlorophenol (a chemical by-product of chlorine) is responsible for weakening food tolerance in some people.
  • Studies also found that adults with high levels of Dichlorophenol in their urine were up to 80% more likely to have food allergies to eggs, fish, milk, peanuts, shellfish, soy, tree nuts and wheat.

How does this happen?

Chlorine kills bad bacteria in water, but what if it also kills naturally occurring good bacteria in our digestive systems. The loss of good bacteria, and weakened food tolerance from Dichlorophenol predisposes people to food allergies.

Allergist, Elina Jerschow, M.D., M.Sc., ACAAI, says, “When researchers have compared bacteria from the bowel in healthy kids versus bacteria in the bowel for kids that have a lot of allergies, they’ve noticed a big difference”.

“Our research shows that high levels of Dichlorophenol-containing pesticides can possibly weaken food tolerance in some people, causing food allergy… this chemical is commonly found in pesticides used by farmers and consumer insect and weed control products, as well as tap water.”

Although, tap water is not the primary source of the Dichlorophenol found in our bodies, purifying drinking water can help.

Sulfur Water Problems

If you experience a rotten egg smell when you turn on your faucet, about to take a sip of water, brush your teeth or shower chances are your water contains Sulfur (Hydrogen Sulfide).

In North Florida the Rotten Egg Smell in Water can be Due To:

  • An abundance of Sulfur gases, caused by the natural decomposition of vegetation. If you are experiencing this form of Sulfur your well water is likely influenced by a swampy area
  • A living organism called Sulfate Reducing Bacteria feeding on Sulfates in water, producing the foul odors

Although, Sulfur does not usually pose a health risk at the concentrations found in our North Florida water, it can cause more trouble than meets the eye…or in this case, the nose.

Effects of Sulfur on Items & Appliances in Your Home

Sulfur in water corrodes plumbing metals such as steel, iron, copper and brass. It discolors brass and copper utensils, and tarnishes silverware and silver jewelry. Sulfur causes stains (from yellow to black) on kitchen and bathroom fixtures, sometimes even laundry.

Beverages such as tea, coffee and juices made with water containing Sulfur typically have an unpleasant taste and odor. Sulfur in water also negatively affects the quality of cooked foods.

In some instances precipitated Sulfur produces soot like material which turns water black.

Iron in Your Water – Rust in Your Home

Iron is a troublesome mineral in water supplies. It is characterized by rusty taste and color, bad odor, damage to hair, unpleasant feel on skin and its tendency to stain everything it comes in contact with. Staining can occur from water with a concentration of iron as low as 0.3 parts per million (ppm).

Signs of Iron in Water:

Stains

  • Causes red, yellow, or brown stains on laundry, dishes, sinks and tubs that are difficult – if not impossible – to remove.
  • Iron in irrigation water causes unsightly rust stains on driveways, sidewalks and exterior walls in homes and buildings.
  • Cleaning these stains with bleach is not the correct approach since chlorine is a powerful oxidant that can make the stains look worse.

Food

  • Some forms of iron give water a metallic or bitter taste that carries over into coffee, tea and other beverages.
  • Iron can add a gray to black color to beverages.
  • Food, especially vegetables, cooked in water containing iron turns dark and absorbs the unpleasant flavor of the water.

Clogs

  • Iron in water can accumulate and clog plumbing fixtures, dishwashers, washing machines, sprinklers, wells, water pumps, refrigerators and other water using appliances.
  • The resulting damage can be expensive to repair.

Hair Damage

Even low levels of iron in your water can have many unwanted effects on your hair:

• Blonde hair (natural or colored) can turn rusty and/or orange, sometimes even pink

• Dark hair can darken and end up with a dark red or orange hue

• Hair can feel dry, crunchy, dull and can lose its shine

• Iron will interfere with proper processing of chemical hair treatments such as highlights, perms and relaxers

Forms of Iron:

Bacterial Iron

When oxygen, water and iron mix they create the right conditions for bacterial iron to bloom.

It feeds on the iron in water leaving behind a reddish brown or yellow slime that can clog plumbing and cause an offensive odor.

This slime or sludge is particularly noticeable in standing water such as toilet tanks.

Make sure to check your toilet tank once in a while for any signs of these unwanted bacteria. The sooner you address this problem, the less damage it will cause.

Clear-Water Iron

Water that comes out of the faucet clear, but turns red or brown after standing

Called “ferrous” iron.

Red-Water Iron

Water that is red or yellow when first drawn is “ferric” iron.

This means the iron has already oxidized (rusted) in the ground, in your well or in your water system.

How Do I Fix My Water?

Depending on the type of iron and other contaminants in your water supply one of following technologies can be utilized to solve your problem:

• Water Softener
• Activated Carbon
• Ozone
• Chlorination
• Reverse Osmosis
• Distillers

What Should I Do Next?

Get The Lead Out Of Your Water

Millions of Americans living across the U.S. don’t know the quality of their drinking water. They assume that what comes out of their tap is pure and clean. And unfortunately, by the time they become aware irreversible damage to their health may have already started.

Lead Contamination Poses a Serious Threat to the Safety of Drinking Water

This colorless, odorless and tasteless metal can go undetected in water. Excessive amounts of lead place adults at higher risk for cancer, stroke, kidney disease, memory problems and high blood pressure. However, children are at an even higher risk due to their rapidly growing bodies absorbing lead more quickly and efficiently. As a result causing premature birth, reduced birth weight, seizures, hearing loss, behavioral problems, brain damage, learning disabilities and a lower IQ level in children.  In conclusion, the most important protection is to prevent lead exposure before it occurs.

Your Household Plumbing Could be the Source of Lead in Your Drinking Water

Lead can leach into your drinking water from the distribution system that carries water to your home, and from the plumbing within your home. That’s right: YOUR household plumbing may be the cause of lead in your drinking water! One source of lead is the solder used to join copper pipes. Certain well pumps have also been implicated. The most common sources of lead are brass or chrome-plated brass faucets and fixtures from which significant amounts of lead can enter into the water.

If your water is acidic or highly alkaline it will dissolve or corrode metals that introduce lead into your water. Whether, you get your water from the local water department or from a private well, purifying your water at the tap is the only way of assuring safe, pure water.

Protect Your Pipes From Freezing!

We’re expecting a hard freeze tonight. Please remember to bring people, pets and plants indoors.

Helpful hints to protect your pipes from freezing:

1 .Protect all outside exposed water lines. Shut off valves including outside water faucet hose bibs, water lines for water softeners and other water treatment equipment, pool equipment and/or sprinkler irrigation back flow preventers. All valves need to be completely protected not just the water piping. You can use foam wrap, a blanket, a towel or insulation tape.

2. Insulate both hot and cold water pipes. A hot water supply line can freeze just as fast as a cold water supply line if water is not running through the pipe.

3. A light bulb burning during the freeze in your pump house, or exterior closet can furnish enough heat to protect water equipment from a typical freeze.

4. Keep garage doors closed tightly if there are water supply lines in the garage. Or cover the pipes with a blanket or a towel.

5. Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors and all other cabinet areas that are located on outside walls. This allows warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to take all child safety measures that are necessary in your home, such as cleaning supplies.

6. During cold snaps, do not alternate temperature settings on your thermostat. Keeping your thermostat set to the same temperature during the day and night will help keep pipe temperatures consistent. If you are leaving for an extended period of time, set your thermostats no lower than 60F.

7. Open the attic access doors or stairs to allow warm air to circulate if water pipes are in the attic.

8. To keep your backflow preventer from freezing: turn off the incoming and both test ports having screw driver stops need to be turned to bleed the test ports down. Then insulate the above ground pipes.

9. To keep your pool filters, pumps and pipes from freezing: Run your pool equipment during the freeze. Change your timers to run the pool equipment at night and keep the equipment running if freezing temperatures continue into the day.
