Carbon Filter Advantages

Carbon plays multiple roles in Water Treatment. It is efficient in removing certain chemicals, especially organic compounds, and improves the taste and clarity of drinking water.

Why Carbon Filters?

Your tap water may come in contact with radon, benzene, solvents, trihalomethanes, volatile organic chemicals (pesticides and herbicides) and hundreds of other man-made chemicals before entering your home. Carbon Filters are a great option to remove these impurities.

You can use this type of filter  to remove chemicals that give unpleasant odor or taste to water. Also, for chemicals like chlorine and its by-products, hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg  odor), and some forms of iron.

These Substances if Not Removed Can Pose Health Risks!

Removing substances from your water is vital since it can cause cancer, neurological problems and present other health risks.

Carbon Filters are made from raw, organic materials such as coconut shell, anthracite or bituminous coal and wood. Carbon is probably the most absorbent material known to man. It is very efficient since activated carbon has thousands of tiny cracks that millions of unwanted particles attach to as water passes through it.

Carbon Filter Types

 Whole-House Filter

We install a Whole-House Filter at the main water line where water first enters the home. Delivering the same high-quality filtered water to every faucet in your home. Kitchen and bathroom sinks, showers and bathtubs, washing machine, dishwasher, all of it with have the Best water.

This is especially important because the Whole House Carbon Filter removes chlorine and its carcinogenic by-products that we absorb through lungs and skin in the shower, and bathtub.  Inhalation is a concern since chlorine is a volatile gas that escapes from water into the air.

 Point of Use Filter

We install a Point of Use Filter at the water supply pipe just before a faucet, typically the kitchen sink. From it, filtered water flows to a separate water tap next to the main faucet. We do not treat water at the main faucet (hot or cold).

With this system, you will have an unlimited supply of clean delicious water in your kitchen. Your system will pay for itself by eliminating the cost of buying bottled water.

An under-sink filter protects you from ingesting contaminants by treating your drinking and cooking water. However, it will not safeguard you from the risk of exposure to chlorine and its carcinogenic by-products in the shower or bathtub like a Whole-House Filter would.

Carbon Filter Maintenance

Whole House Carbon Filters have a life expectancy of 2 to 3 years. The life cycle of Point of Use Filters is approximately 1 year. They should be replaced before they breakdown and start releasing contaminants into the water supply.

Carbon Filters Don’t Remove

Carbon Filters do not remove dissolved inorganic contaminants and heavy metals. Things like minerals, salts, fluoride, arsenic, copper, mercury, nickel, nitrates and other contaminants. Reverse Osmosis, or Water Distillers are necessary to remove these impurities.

Easy and Effective Tips for Staying Hydrated

Optimal hydration = optimal health. Check out these great and fun tips to make it much easier!

1. Begin and End Your Day With H2O

Drink a glass of water when you wake up to rev up your metabolism, fuel your brain, hydrate your body and flush out toxins… and it may even help you eat less. Add freshly squeezed lemon juice to increase its beneficial effects.
In the evening relax with a mug of herbal tea to de-stress and hydrate.

2. Plan Ahead, Pack your Water

Refill a large stainless steel or glass bottle with filtered water and take it wherever you go. Having your water within arm’s reach will increase your likelihood of drinking water throughout the day. Remember to sip before you get thirsty.

3. Visualize Your Water Intake – Keep Track of Your Hydration

With a permanent marker write a schedule on your water bottle and the number of ounces (6 to 8) you will drink every hour. It is wise not to guzzle large amount of water at one time since your body can not benefit from that form of drinking.

4. Set Reminders

Program recurring hourly reminders to drink your glasses of water. Use scheduled emails or texts, your calendar, your to-do list, or set alarms. Or you can choose another schedule that works better for you.

5. Use an App to Track your Water Intake

Keeping up with how many glasses of water you’ve consumed can be easy (and fun) with the help of free apps. Download Daily Water https://goo.gl/NN6FPf or Carbodroid https://goo.gl/35Ra7z

6. Flavor your Water

You can infuse your water with fresh lemon or lime juice, fresh mint leafs, sliced cucumber or ginger. Although, iced tea is delicious and refreshing it is also a mild diuretic. To stay optimally hydrated drink a glass of water for every glass of tea you consume.

7. Don’t Just Drink Your Water – Eat It Too

Eat water-rich foods like vegetables, fruit and yogurt to automatically up your fluid intake. Watermelon is renowned for its high water content and essential electrolytes that are needed by the body for nerve and brain function. Many other foods contain lots of water and other essential nutrients. Some top picks include cucumber (96% water), zucchini (95% water) and grapefruit (91% water).

8. Drink Water Between Meals

As soon as you start eating, your body starts releasing digestive juices. Drinking water at the same time dilutes them, which hinders the proper break down of foods and inhibits the absorption of both nutrients and water. Eating dried, dehydrated or overly salty foods increases the body’s need to consume water while eating. Eat healthy whole foods and water-rich foods regularly.

9. Boost Your Energy with Cold Water

Increase your energy by drinking cold filtered water. You may be surprised by how much more energy you will have as a result of better hydration. Studies show that people instantly feel more alert after drinking H2O. It’s a simple, healthy way to snap out of a midday slump.

10. Popsicles Anyone?

Everyone loves Popsicles! They’re cool, they’re sweet, and they quench thirst. This means they’re a great way to help you on your quest for optimal hydration. Children can benefit from having Popsicles readily available. Check out this link for some great healthy Popsicle recipes – http://goo.gl/3vHdtC

Cheers to a Well Hydrated You!!

Importance of Staying Hydrated

Water is the most essential, yet most forgotten, nutrient for human beings. You can last for weeks without food, but only days without water. Every day your body loses water through sweat, urine, feces and breathing. Summer heat and outdoor activities increase perspiration and the risk of dehydration.

Maintaining hydration is important to your health. However, you may be so busy with everyday activities that you forget for long periods of time to pause for a water break. This can adversely affect your health, and once you start feeling thirsty you are already dehydrated.

Signs of dehydration include:

• Fatigue
• Loss of appetite
• Digestive imbalances
• Flushed skin
• Heat intolerance
• Stiffness, inflammation, and muscle spasms
• Light-headedness
• Irritating skin troubles: acne, dryness, chapped lips
• Dark-colored urine
• Dry cough

We Know that Drinking the Right Amount of Water Each Day can be Difficult

Determining the right amount of water you need to stay hydrated is no easy task. Even though the “drink 8, 8 oz. glasses of water a day” rule has been very popular, it’s important to note that individual fluid needs differ depending on your level of activity, how much you sweat, environmental temperature, humidity, the clothes you are wearing, etc. An easy way to see if you are properly hydrated is to check your urine. If it’s clear, pale or a straw-color, you are okay. If it’s darker than that, you need to up your water intake!

Aging impairs the body’s natural thirst mechanism, which makes it easier to become dehydrated. At a minimum you should drink HALF your body weight in ounces of water. For example if you weight 150 lbs. you need to consume 75 ounces of water per day. If you are working in the garden, or exercising you must increase the amount of water to compensate for water loss due to increased perspiration.

Remember that caffeine magnifys the potential for dehydration. For every cup of coffee, tea or caffeinated soda you consume add an additional cup of water to counteract caffeine’s diuretic effect.

The quality of the water you drink is important to your health.

Whether your water comes from a municipal water plant or from a well it is wise to have it tested for contaminants that might be harmful to your well being. If it does, there are several Water Treatment options available to protect you. Depending on what is in your water Reverse Osmosis or Ultra Filtration, Ultraviolet Purification, or Ozone Technology may be the best option to safeguard your health.

Beware of Hard Water Ruining Your Granite or Marble Countertops

Hard water is very “hard” on marble and granite. Both stones are porous and can absorb water. This makes them very susceptible to the mineral deposits in hard water. This mineral build-up leaves a whitish, crusty film and or spots, that stain granite and marble. The stains that can occur on any part of the surface are particularly noticeable around faucets. They are difficult to remove without damaging the marble or granite.

Removing the mineral deposits from your water with a Water Softener goes a long way in protecting stone counter tops. This is the best way to keep them looking beautiful, and new.

contamination in baby water

Dangers of Nitrates in Water

Nitrates are one of the most common and widespread contaminants in Florida. Waste disposal (particularly from animal farming), the increase of artificial fertilizers in homes and farms, septic systems, and changes in land has caused an increase in the levels of Nitrates in groundwater supplies throughout North Florida through the years.

Effects on Your Infant

Although high levels of Nitrates are not a direct threat for adults, it can affect your infant. Nitrates present a serious health concern for infants six months or younger. If bottle-fed babies drink formula made with water high in Nitrates, or if an infant drinks water or juice containing Nitrates, they can develop a potentially fatal condition: “blue baby syndrome.” This is when Nitrates interfere with the blood’s ability to carry oxygen to all parts of the body.

Nitrates do not change the smell, taste, or color of your water, making it very hard to detect without a water test.

Boiling Water Worsens the Problem

Do NOT boil water that may contain Nitrates. Boiling water will not decrease Nitrates, rather it INCREASES the concentration by evaporating water and leaving Nitrates behind.

Test Your Drinking Water on a Regular Basis

Testing is done frequently for contaminants in municipal water supplies at the treatment plant. However, contaminants can sneak in as it travels through water mains and your own home plumbing. Therefore, we highly recommend you test your drinking water on a regular basis unless you have a water treatment system.

Well Water

If your drinking water comes from a private well make sure you test your water annually. This ensures it is free of Nitrates and other contaminants. This is most important in North Florida drinking water where pollution from runoff at dairy farms, chicken farms, and crop farms is increasing.

We Can Help

Best Water successfully removes Nitrates using water treatment equipment such as Reverse Osmosis, Ion Exchange, and Distillation. Mechanical filters (including “pitcher filters” like Brita) or chemical disinfection, such as chlorination, do NOT remove Nitrates from water.

Stress and Dehydration

Second to air, water is our bodies most vital substance. Water is a key component for our body to function. It effects bones, blood, muscle, skin, saliva, organs, etc. It is necessary for digesting and absorbing vitamins and nutrients, proper digestion, detoxifying the liver and kidneys, and carrying away waste.

Our Bodies Depend on Water for Survival and Health

We lose water every day when we breathe, sweat and go to the bathroom. Because our bodies can’t store water it is important that we replace it throughout the day.

Without the right amount of water, our bodies become dehydrated and stop working properly. One of the least known, yet detrimental consequences of dehydration is stress.

When under stress, our heart beats rapidly; we breathe shallower and faster, and perspiration increases causing our body to lose more water.

A study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that dehydration by as little as half a liter (2 cups)  “…strongly increased cortisol, epinephrine and norepinephrine, the primary stress hormones.” Our bodies assume a survival mode and take the fight-or-flight position. The stress hormones remain activated until the stressful situation, or state of dehydration is resolved.

Without replacing the water lost a vicious cycle is established: Dehydration causes stress and stress causes dehydration.

Of course dehydration is not the only cause of stress, and drinking more water won’t make our problems go away. But it is safe to say that drinking enough water is a positive first step toward breaking the dehydration/stress cycle.

According to new research, up to 75% of Americans may be functioning in a chronic state of dehydration. Although many of us understand the importance of staying hydrated, it is easy to forget to drink water throughout our busy days.

Here are some tips to make staying hydrated easier:

– Fill a stainless steel or glass bottle with Purified Water and keep it with you wherever you go.

– Keep a glass of water next to your bed so you can drink right before you go to bed and first thing in the morning. Your body loses water while you sleep.

– Take small sips when you drink allowing your body to absorb the water. Make sure not to down big amounts at once this will overflow your kidneys.

– Avoid caffeinated beverages including: coffee, tea and sodas. These beverages will only worsen the stress condition and weaken the adrenal system, which is central to the hormonal system – drink Purified Water instead.

– Keep a record of how much water you drink throughout the day.

– Hydrate before, during and after exercise.

– Don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink water, by then you may be 2 glasses below your normal water needs.

– Drink more when you’re sick. Even though you don’t feel like it, you really need to keep hydrated to help your body recover from various infections. If you’re dehydrated, you’ll feel much worse.

Remember that our health is truly dependent on the quality and quantity of the water we drink. If you want to improve your water let us know!

Are Chemicals in Water Fueling Food Allergies?

We know that chemicals and hard minerals in water can cause skin conditions and allergies (dry skin, dermatitis, eczema and hives). But, what if these chemicals  link to food allergies?

Facts on Food Allergies in America

The number of Americans with food allergies is higher than ever before. Almost 15 million Americans suffer, including 1 in every 13 children.

A study released in 2013 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated, “food allergies among children increased approximately 50% between 1997 and 2011.” This is an alarming statistic!

Tap Water (Chlorine) May Be Part of the Blame

  • Research, by the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI), indicates chlorine in tap water may be partially to blame.
  • Chlorine is used by 90% of municipalities in the U.S., therefore it effects nearly everyone.
  • Researchers believe that Dichlorophenol (a chemical by-product of chlorine) is responsible for weakening food tolerance in some people.
  • Studies also found that adults with high levels of Dichlorophenol in their urine were up to 80% more likely to have food allergies to eggs, fish, milk, peanuts, shellfish, soy, tree nuts and wheat.

How does this happen?

Chlorine kills bad bacteria in water, but what if it also kills naturally occurring good bacteria in our digestive systems. The loss of good bacteria, and weakened food tolerance from Dichlorophenol predisposes people to food allergies.

Allergist, Elina Jerschow, M.D., M.Sc., ACAAI, says, “When researchers have compared bacteria from the bowel in healthy kids versus bacteria in the bowel for kids that have a lot of allergies, they’ve noticed a big difference”.

“Our research shows that high levels of Dichlorophenol-containing pesticides can possibly weaken food tolerance in some people, causing food allergy… this chemical is commonly found in pesticides used by farmers and consumer insect and weed control products, as well as tap water.”

Although, tap water is not the primary source of the Dichlorophenol found in our bodies, purifying drinking water can help.

Sulfur Water Problems

If you experience a rotten egg smell when you turn on your faucet, about to take a sip of water, brush your teeth or shower chances are your water contains Sulfur (Hydrogen Sulfide).

In North Florida the Rotten Egg Smell in Water can be Due To:

  • An abundance of Sulfur gases, caused by the natural decomposition of vegetation. If you are experiencing this form of Sulfur your well water is likely influenced by a swampy area
  • A living organism called Sulfate Reducing Bacteria feeding on Sulfates in water, producing the foul odors

Although, Sulfur does not usually pose a health risk at the concentrations found in our North Florida water, it can cause more trouble than meets the eye…or in this case, the nose.

Effects of Sulfur on Items & Appliances in Your Home

Sulfur in water corrodes plumbing metals such as steel, iron, copper and brass. It discolors brass and copper utensils, and tarnishes silverware and silver jewelry. Sulfur causes stains (from yellow to black) on kitchen and bathroom fixtures, sometimes even laundry.

Beverages such as tea, coffee and juices made with water containing Sulfur typically have an unpleasant taste and odor. Sulfur in water also negatively affects the quality of cooked foods.

In some instances precipitated Sulfur produces soot like material which turns water black.

Iron in Your Water – Rust in Your Home

Iron is a troublesome mineral in water supplies. It is characterized by rusty taste and color, bad odor, damage to hair, unpleasant feel on skin and its tendency to stain everything it comes in contact with. Staining can occur from water with a concentration of iron as low as 0.3 parts per million (ppm).

Signs of Iron in Water:

Stains

  • Causes red, yellow, or brown stains on laundry, dishes, sinks and tubs that are difficult – if not impossible – to remove.
  • Iron in irrigation water causes unsightly rust stains on driveways, sidewalks and exterior walls in homes and buildings.
  • Cleaning these stains with bleach is not the correct approach since chlorine is a powerful oxidant that can make the stains look worse.

Food

  • Some forms of iron give water a metallic or bitter taste that carries over into coffee, tea and other beverages.
  • Iron can add a gray to black color to beverages.
  • Food, especially vegetables, cooked in water containing iron turns dark and absorbs the unpleasant flavor of the water.

Clogs

  • Iron in water can accumulate and clog plumbing fixtures, dishwashers, washing machines, sprinklers, wells, water pumps, refrigerators and other water using appliances.
  • The resulting damage can be expensive to repair.

Hair Damage

Even low levels of iron in your water can have many unwanted effects on your hair:

• Blonde hair (natural or colored) can turn rusty and/or orange, sometimes even pink

• Dark hair can darken and end up with a dark red or orange hue

• Hair can feel dry, crunchy, dull and can lose its shine

• Iron will interfere with proper processing of chemical hair treatments such as highlights, perms and relaxers

Forms of Iron:

Bacterial Iron

When oxygen, water and iron mix they create the right conditions for bacterial iron to bloom.

It feeds on the iron in water leaving behind a reddish brown or yellow slime that can clog plumbing and cause an offensive odor.

This slime or sludge is particularly noticeable in standing water such as toilet tanks.

Make sure to check your toilet tank once in a while for any signs of these unwanted bacteria. The sooner you address this problem, the less damage it will cause.

Clear-Water Iron

Water that comes out of the faucet clear, but turns red or brown after standing

Called “ferrous” iron.

Red-Water Iron

Water that is red or yellow when first drawn is “ferric” iron.

This means the iron has already oxidized (rusted) in the ground, in your well or in your water system.

How Do I Fix My Water?

Depending on the type of iron and other contaminants in your water supply one of following technologies can be utilized to solve your problem:

• Water Softener
• Activated Carbon
• Ozone
• Chlorination
• Reverse Osmosis
• Distillers

What Should I Do Next?
